The Future of Old Media: Description

I will introduce the topic by briefly discussing old media: what it is, it’s beginnings & it’s contributions to society. Next, I want to examine what has been happening to it now that new media is on the rise and answer questions such as how are companies affected by this and how are they trying to survive. For example, in an article from The Atlantic titled, “End Times,” Michael Hirschorn wrote that newspaper companies such as The New York Times are in deep debt as shown in their books and are “destined for significant and traumatic change.” It shows that new media impacts a company as huge and well known as The NY Times; although the economic crisis may have played a role in that. Of course, I will research that further. Lastly, I will attempt to voice my opinion in what I think what will happen to old media.

  1. Most people look into the future without paying attention to what will happen to what they are leaving behind from the past. This is a great topic and its playing out in front of us daily. The really scary aspect of all of this is that these mega-companies are all owned by the same people. It is their giant business models that are in need of revision. It's not as if the whole USA is ready to give up on paper. There is still something more engaging and personable in a letter than an e-mail. Unfortunately that isn't really reflected in a company's balance sheet.

  2. Newspaper industry will probably go out of business soon... as we know most of the newspapers recieve their revenues through advertisements, and with the current height of internet more companies are advertising online, throught internet they reach a lot more customers and companies are able to target youngsters, who spend the most of the time online. Newspaper companies will have to come up with different business models if they still want to stay in business
